AWI tickled pink at 82nd birthday festivities

AMANZIMTOTI Women’s Institute (WI) celebrated its 82nd birthday and prize-giving on 5 September.

President Yvonne Dixie welcomed Mary Redding, ex-Federated Women’s Institute president and currently president of Umkomaas WI, all current and past members and other visitors and thanked all for attending.

The birthday theme ‘in the pink’ saw tables decorated with pink flowers and pink serviettes and all the women dressed in pink. The décor glowed with a rosy light. Birthday cards were read out by Grace and everyone was thanked for their greetings.

Alicia Kelner read a poem entitled ‘The Mirror’.

A fun quiz was led by Yvonne, about pink having two meanings including ‘in the pink’ which means looking healthy.

Pat Rhodes read a WI limerick, Patricia McCann led everyone in singing ‘When I’m 64’, a great favourite by the Beatles, and also read a poem ‘When I am Old’. Yvonne Dixie, Alicia Kelner, Corinne Winson and Grace Finch performed a song and dance act, ‘Older Ladies Anthem’ which was hilarious and clever. Thank you all those who entertained at the party, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. AWI has such talent. Mary Redding then helped Yvonne to hand out trophies to this year’s deserving winners:

Cookery: First Cynthia de Lange, second Alicia Kelner, third Yvonne Dixie.

Handicraft: First Yvonne Dixie, second Janet Jackman, third Alicia Kelner.

Tea and scrumptious snacks were enjoyed. Thank you to Kogie Chetty for always being the main helper on these special occasions, all those who helped her and all who helped to set up and clear away.

In the raffle, first prize was won by Mary Redding, with second prize going to Barbara Lane.

AWI meets in the library activities room on the second Tuesday of the month at 9.15am. Call Yvonne Dixie on 031-903-1942.
