Doublespeak abounds ahead of elections

EDITOR – Having read through DA leader Mmusi Maimane’s speech delivered at the Apartheid Museum, I can only conclude that this is a perfect example of doublespeak.

I assume he is trying to sound presidential, however, the overriding message is racism, as perpetrated by whites.

It seems that the DA and the ANC both have one thing in common – both play the race card. And of course, both claim the moral high-ground. The major difference is that the ANC and its associates have always used racism as a strategic weapon, to divert attention away from its nefarious activities, while the DA, rather naively, hopes it will attract black voters.

Among other things, Maimane says “I will not tolerate racism in the party I lead.” Yet he is invoking racism. And how come he has failed to take action against his own MEC for Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela, whose blatantly anti-white comments have been published in the media? So blacks can denigrate whites, and that’s okay?

Maimane further says that his ‘objective’ is to ensure all levels of the DA “reflect the diversity of our complex society” and he will do so “without resorting to dehumanising quotas that reduce human beings to statistics.” Oh really? Maybe this is a case of selective amnesia but it seems Maimane is unaware of statutory discrimination such as AA, EE, BEE, and BBBEE, all rather cute sounding forms of racial engineering.

And how about one of my favourites, the quota system for 210 students, applied at the UKZN Medical School: 69% Black African, 19% Indian, 9% Coloured, 2% White and 1% Other. These are further categorised as “students from SADC countries, mature students, pre-selected on grade 11 results, matric results, quintile one and two schools and the poorest of the poor.”

I’m certain that even the likes of Heinrich Himmler would have been impressed at such precision.

So, as the country continues to teeter and totter under its shameless leadership, the invective will no doubt become more strident as we approach the elections. Thank goodness we don’t have a white government.
