Skills developed at free rugby clinic

THE free developmental rugby clinic held at Umkomaas Primary School from July 12-14 was a great success.
A follow up clinic is planned for October and the coaches are hoping a competitive development team and rugby tours will be the result of this initiative.

Twenty enthusiastic beginner rugby players from Umkomaas, Craigieburn, Magabeni, and Amanzimtoti attended the Transkei Life Project Rugby Clinic.

The boys benefited greatly from their two World Rugby Level 2 coaches, Gideon Cordier and Schaun Colin. Coach Cordier recently returned from the five day Investec International Rugby Academy where he gained tremendous insight which he shared with the boys.

“These boys learnt more in three days than most do in three weeks at school,” said Cordier.

The clinic covered all the basics of rugby, from passing and running to tackling, rucking, mauling and more. Each day prizes donated by generous sponsors were awarded to boys who showed great attitude and determination. The final day included a game where all their new found skills were put into practice.

“Watching these boys play this game so beautifully after such a short time gave me goosebumps,” said Colin. “There are definitely future stars in this group.”

Transkei Life Project works with children from local informal settlements and has a mission of ’empowering vulnerable children’.
