Greg and Marion claw back mixed pairs victory

Marion Crouch and Greg McLeod are mixed pairs champions for 2017 at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club.

BARBARA Beamson and her partner Mike Roberts started out very strong in the finals of the nominated mixed pairs at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club last Saturday, and were in the lead for the first half of the game.

However, their opponents Greg McLeod and Marion Crouch fought back and managed to overtake them to win the game and the Cup. Both teams produced top-class bowling, much to the delight of the spectators, and it was a pity one team had to come second.

The women’s novice singles also played out last Saturday on a round-robin basis and the new champion for 2017/18 is Debbie Gueffroy, with Dawn Schauer the runner-up. Well done to all the novices for the good standard of bowls played and their excellent understanding of the etiquette of competitions.

Peter Shepard and Ian Shearer played well to win the first semi-final of the men’s nominated pairs against Ken Leech and Wessie van der Westhuizen. In men’s senior singles, Lofty van Tonder beat George Glaves in round three, and Greg McLeod beat Ian Crouch in round two.

Julie Sutherland and Amanda Ninow won their quarter final game in women’s nominated pairs against Denise Bingham and Jeannette Els. In another quarter final game Robyn Hutton came from behind to beat Denise Bingham in the last four ends of the women’s senior singles.

Winners of the women’s 2-4-2 were Vera Broskie and Elmarie Young, while Amanda Ninow and Linda McGregor were runners-up. Second session went to Joan van Rensburg and Jacqui Fouché and the 100 board was won by Sue Welch.

Men’s trips were won by Wessie van der Westhuizen, Graham Ellis and Paul Els. Runners-up were Herbert Hofmann, Owen Turner and Andy Jones. Second session went to Alec Stirzaker, Barry Buckland and Coy Schrauwen.

At TGIF the 100 board was won by Robyn Hutton. Coy Schrauwen was not present to win the attendance draw so the prize will go up to R200 next time. The Damagers number was drawn in the key draw, but sadly the key did not turn the lock, so the jackpot will be R2,480 next time.

Do take note that there will be no TGIF on Friday, 11 August due to the show – ‘Fun Galore’ being staged on 10, 11 and 12 August. There are still a few tickets left for Thursday and Friday nights (10 and 11 August) and booking is essential. TGIF will return on Friday, 18 August as usual.

Another item to note is that quiz night will be on Wednesday, 30 August this month, and not the 16th. Continue to check the notice board for cardings for next weekend as all competitions must be completed by the end of this month.

Birthday greetings for the week go to Duncan Wright and Ian Mills, and get-well wishes to all who are not in the best of health.
