CRIME ALERT: Amanzimtoti home invaders batter pensioner couple

An elderly Amanzimtoti couple was left batted and bruised after home invaders assaulted them in their Longacres Drive home on Tuesday night, 7 November.

Billy Odendaal (67) was in bed and his wife Angela (67) was watching TV when three men broke their security gate lock and smashed down their front door with a 14 pound hammer at about 8.30pm.

They entered so quickly neither had a chance to reach their panic buttons. “They slapped my wife around, before they came into the bedroom to demand money,” said Billy.

They continued to assault the couple and hit Billy on the head with a firearm. He also has a gash on his back, which could be a stab wound but he is not sure how it was inflicted. Angela sustained a black eye in the process.

The couple eventually could not withstand the beating any longer and showed the men where their safe was. They smashed it off the wall with the hammer and escaped with about R4,000.

They took the TV off the wall and put it by the front door, but in their hurry to leave, they left it behind.

The Odendaals suspect they were targetted because their front and side fence was downed in the 10 October storm and the municipality has not had it repaired yet.

“They were in and out so quickly,” said Billy. “It was an absolute nightmare.”
