Tuesday Life Hack: 6 useful hacks for cooking and baking

Why spend more time preparing food, baking or making treats in the kitchen than you have to? There are plenty of short-cuts that will save you time so you can focus on other important things in life. Here are six hacks that can come in handy when you’re cooking or baking:

1. Pancake batter

When pancakes don’t come out the in the shape and form that they’re meant to, it can be a little disheartening. Try using a meat baster to “squeeze” your pancake batter onto a hot pan and you’ll get perfectly-shaped pancakes every time.

2. Rice krispies treats

Kids are probably not the only ones that enjoy rice krispies treats made with marshmallow or chocolate. The problem with preparing these is that the marshmallow always sticks to your hands. To prevent this from happening, run your hands under cold water before pressing the rice krispies in the pan, the marshmallow won’t stick to your hands.

 3. Stained plastic containers

Curried dishes always tend to leave a permanent stain when stored in plastic containers. Prevent this from happening by spraying the plastic container with non-stick cooking spray before decanting the curried food or sauces.

4. Juicing fresh lemons

To get the most juice out of freshly squeezed lemons, bring them to room temperature and roll them under your palm against the kitchen counter before squeezing. You’ll be drinking tasty lemonade in no time.

5. Removing burnt food

If you’re cooking the likelihood of burnt food sticking to the bottom of your pot/pan is high. To easily remove this burnt food from your pot/pan, add a drop or two of dish-washing liquid and add water to cover the bottom of the pot/pan and bring to the boil on the stove. You’ll see the burnt food slip off the pot/pan easily.

6. Flouring your baking pan

If a recipe calls for flouring your baking tray, use a bit of the cake mix to flour the pan . This way you won’t have a white mess on the outside of your cake or biscuits.
