An Isipingo rapist will spend 10 years behind bars after the Durban Regional Court found him guilty of an incident that occurred in 2015.
On 24 June 2015 the 15-year-old victim was going to the tuckshop for her granny. The accused, Sandile Mayeza, saw her on the way to the shop and told her to buy him some chappies and he will return the money to her on her way home. When she returned from the shop, he told her to go to his shack and get the money from under his pillow.
When she was in his shack Mayeza threatened her with a knife and raped her. He told her that if she told anyone he would kill her. Fearing for her life, she kept quiet until she was confronted by her aunt who suspected that something was emotionally wrong with her.
Mayeza was arrested and charged on the same day the rape was reported. He was convicted on 29 June and received 10 years imprisonment for rape and a further five years imprisonment wholly suspended for five years, on condition he is not again convicted of rape and or any sexual-related offence committed during the period of suspension.
Constable Thabile Ndlovu of Umlazi FCS worked tirelessly to ensure that a good sentence was given to the accused. “We are sending a stern warning to any sexual perpetrators that we will ensure you are arrested and face the long arm of the law. We will not allow you to hurt innocent women and children in our community again. Well done to Cst Ndlovu for her commitment and securing a good sentence.”
