Local bookworms celebrate National Book Week

Isipingo library visitors celebrate National Book Week this week.

Isipingo library was abuzz last week as it celebrated National Book Week. “We are happy that our library is always buzzing with children who are either reading for leisure, busy with homework or just enjoying play time with our recently received toy collection.

“This week was no different as we celebrated National Book Week, and we had more visitors than usual as we invited some of the schools and pre-schools to join us,” said librarian, Nothando Ntuli.

“We had grade 7 pupils visit from Kamalinee Primary School who came for their book reviews. The pupils spent time with the librarian doing book reviews of some of their recent reads. It’s always fulfilling to listen to students during book reviews as a librarian because it simply means that our library collection meets their reading needs. The students are regular readers and this was evident from the confidence they portrayed when reviewing the books.”

Pre-school visitors had a fun time in the toy section of the library. Since it is Heritage Month and the library has a beautiful book display to showcase, it was easier for the younger children to identify the different cultural activities explained to them with pictures.

The library staff also visited Cyrene Pre-School for a story reading session and singalong songs. “We are looking at visiting the ECD centres in our area to familiarise the children with the culture of reading. Teachers are welcome to request our library staff to visit them,” said Nothando.
