Prisoner shot dead in attempted Isipingo SAPS jail break

An escaping prisoner was shot dead and four others injured during an attempted jail break at Isipingo SAPS holding cells on Monday, 5 November.

“We can confirm that cases of murder, attempted murder and escaping from lawful custody were opened at Isipingo police station. All wounded were awaiting trial prisoners. The case has been transferred to the IPID for investigation,” said Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane of the SAPS KZN Media Centre.

It is alleged the prisoner who had been arrested for stealing wheel rims and tyres had tried to escape when officers went to the cells to feed the prisoners. No police were injured in the attempted escape.
