Toti teen puts her boot in for KZN team

Nthabiseng Gumede shows the skills that got her selected for the KZN girls U15 soccer team.

Kingsway High School’s Nthabiseng Gumede (15) was selected for the KZN girls U15 soccer team and has already represented her province during the school holidays.

The grade 10 pupil has been part of her school’s soccer team since she started playing in grade 8.

“I like running, so that’s why I like soccer,” she said. “My ball skills are okay, good enough for a girl.

I have played soccer with my brothers since I was very young.”

Nthabiseng also plays basketball, touch rugby, softball and hockey. She was selected for the KZN U14 team last year for the latter.

“The standard for girls soccer in the province is high, but it can still improve.”

On tour in Johannesburg during the school holidays, her team won all four of their matches against club sides.

“I played defender, but I prefer striker.

Girls only see soccer as a form of exercise at school and don’t continue after, but I would like to carry on playing soccer when I leave school.”

Nthabiseng Gumede receives her certificate for being selected for the KZN girls U15 soccer team from Bafana Bafana legend, Shaun Bartlett.
