Brave duo take on Grand Traverse challenge

TWO local adventurous men, Sean MacFarlane and Micheal Baker tackled the daunting 240km Grand Traverse challenge on Tuesday, 13 June, stretching from the Northern to Southern points of the Drakensberg on foot.

By Saturday, 17 June, five days into the hike, frighting weather forced the men to end the challenge.

The Grand Traverse (TGT) covers the entire Drakensberg escarpment, beginning in the Northern Drakensberg at the Sentinel car park and ending at Bushman’s Nek Border post in Southern Drakensberg. The duration of the hike varies, where it’s comfortably done in eight to 12 days with resupplies of food and equipment brought up to various passes.

“For me, taking on the traverse was the best way to satisfy my urge for the mountains and nature and at the same time to challenge myself. This is an iconic hike and one of the best ways to see the beauty of this country and Mother Nature,” explained Sean.
